As parents grapple with the uncertainties of what happens to their children beyond Grade Six in the CBC curriculum,
Mount Kenya Academy is positioned to offer the best option, with existing infrastructure and resources in place over the years.
Mount Kenya Academy has perfected a holistic approach to education. Before the CBC program was adopted by the Kenyan government, Mount Kenya Academy offered an enriched curriculum that empowered learners to be versatile and broad-based in their knowledge and skills. Music, Art, Home Science, ICT and Sports were already integrated in the learning experiences at the school. Our alumni are professed beneficiaries of this approach.
Today, we are positioned to offer the best education under CBC Junior Secondary School. CBC has particularly found a
home in the school due to the vast enabling infrastructure and resources available. We are currently conducting admissions for Grade 7 in our learner-friendly Junior Secondary School facilities. We offer both day and boarding education for both boys and girls. To enable the implementation of learning, the school has put together tuition rooms, workshops, laboratories and a library. Our able teaching staff has been thoroughly trained in readiness for a smooth take off.
For CBC Junior Secondary, Mount Kenya Academy is ready to give your child the most fulfilling educational experience. We ensure a solid foundation for the leaners as they choose different pathways for learning and a career in the future.
Our well-equipped Computer laboratories and E-learning Centre provide connectivity, hardware and software to cater to the requirements of our students. These facilities are accessible to all students during school hours. Technology has encouraged collaboration and engagement in the learning process.
Science
Science forms a key part of Mount Kenya Academy with students being able to study Physics, Biology and Chemistry. We have three well-designed laboratories which not only make learning Science experiments fun but also help students in achieving better academic results. Our modern facilities enable learners to conduct research and develop scientific skills.
Music
We offer individual and class lessons in Piano, Voice, Woodwinds, Brasses, Percussion and Strings. Students also play together in the Band, Orchestra and the Choir. The School prepares students for both practical and Theory examinations of Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) and London College of Music (LCM) in various instruments. We also cover all aspects of the IGCSE and KCSE Music Curriculum.
Art & Design
Art allows students to express themselves. It gives students an outlet for their creativity. Every subject can be taught either in combination with art or through art. With the help of the teacher, students develop aesthetic awareness and use the creative process in building problem solving skills.
The school has a comprehensive Art program that develops students’ skills in crafts, design, painting and other forms of visual expression. The lessons involve plenty of teacher student interactions.
Coding & Robotics
Mount Kenya Academy utilizes modern technology to prepare our students for future job and career opportunities. We offer coding and computer programming as part of our curriculum, with the belief that learning to code improves academic performance as well as logic, problem-solving, and other broadly applicable thinking skills. We also have a well-curated Robotics program, which gives students the chance to explore their creativity and become future innovators.
Boarding
Boarding
Boys Boarding
We offer full boarding. Boarding students enjoy a vibrant and homely atmosphere within the boarding house and live in modern and comfortable rooms. We believe that boarding has many advantages, not least of which are learning about the tolerance, compromise, kindness and responsibility so necessary when living in a community. We expect all boarders to play a full part in the school’s boarding community and to seek to improve it for the good of everyone. Boarding staff set standards and enforce rules for the good of all, but with a lightness of touch.
They are dedicated to providing support, care and a framework in which the boys can develop as individuals. Boarding staff include a full time resident and qualified nurse and a house parent who are available 24/7 to respond to the needs of students. The house parent works under the direction of assistant boarding master and boarding master, both senior teachers, to provide the much needed parental guidance, care, supervision and homely environment to the students.
The boys and girls eat together but go to their separate houses for homework and going to bed. Boarding facilities include spacious cubicles and a multipurpose common room where a number of activities take place e.g.
- Meetings
- Indoor games
- Private studies
A fire procedure with routine fire drills takes place on a regular basis as part of the safety procedures for our boarding students. All these ensure that the children are very safe. G4S Guards, School Security and Administration Police all provide security for the School
Boarders are not allowed to have mobile phones and laptops in the school. However, parents are allowed to call the children through the Schools’ mobile phones from 4-4:30 pm.
We also offer weekly boarding.
Girls Boarding
Boarding at Mount Kenya Academy comprises the larger part of the School community. As such it shares the principles, aims and practices of the whole school, but also defines others for itself. It is our aim that the boarders form a co-operative, tolerant and purposeful community in which every member can feel comfortable and accepted, and to which all are encouraged to contribute. The policies and practices which follow are designed to achieve this aim. We recognize that boarding is a very different type of life to that experienced by living at home; that both have attractions and detraction; that both offer differing opportunities but also require concessions.
We recognize that every pupil will respond distinctively to the experience and hope that we as a School will be able to cater individually for each pupil’s needs. We also encourage each pupil to appreciate their corporate responsibility to the welfare of the House as a whole, and that it is in the balance between their rights and responsibilities that all our interests will be best served. However daunting they may at first appear, most of the systems will become very familiar to boarders surprisingly quickly. There will be urgent issues at the beginning such as uniform, timetable, layout of the school and the daily routine, which will be covered in induction sessions in the first few days.
Although boarding is second nature to those of us who have lived and worked with it for years, it can present emotional difficulties for many new pupils and their families, especially in the first few weeks and months.
We hope that you will feel able to talk to us about any homesickness that does occur so that we can share our experience of it and try to help. Awareness that the House is a boarder’s “home” will be important to remember for successful integration and depending friendships. Boarders are not allowed to have mobile phones and laptops in the school. However, parents are allowed to call the children through the Schools’ mobile phones from 4-4:30 pm.
